Congratulations to ISSG Affiliate faculty member, Professor Ruth Opara, for publishing “Songs and female names in contemporary Nigeria: a mother’s prayer or men’s muse?” in the Ethnomusicology Forum.
In the article, Opara highlights two distinct ways female names manifest within contemporary music: as mother's healtfelt prayers, and lyrical muses for men. By connecting these gendered expressions to a broader African context, she redefines how audiences understand onomastics - the study of names - through the lens of music.
