Professor Rosalind Morris Announced as Co-Winner of Columbia University Press Distinguished Book Award

October 17, 2025

Professor of Anthropology and former ISSG Director, Rosalind Morris, was announced as co-winner of the eleventh annual Columbia University Press Distinguished Book Award for her book Unstable Ground: The Lives, Deaths, and Afterlives of Gold in South Africa.

The Columbia University Press Faculty Publication committee writes of Unstable Ground,

"The book is a series of trips into the underground, but each return is to a different surface: settlements and squats, mass warfare, global finance, migrant labor, entangled sovereignties, the making and continual unmaking of Apartheid, the HIV epidemic, and sometimes, disconcertingly, we surface into sinkholes, sink back into where we came from. … There’s a deep love and humility in this engagement that I imagine will transform the book’s readers and the field."

Congratulations Rosalind!
