The Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender is thrilled to welcome Professor Tara Gonsalves. Gonsalves joins us as an Assistant Professor of Sociology, in the Columbia Department of Sociology.

Gonsalves’s research focuses on the creation and contention of social categories, through the lens of quantitative and qualitative methods. The research examines the contested processes through which gender and sexuality categories emerge and transform as well as the social consequences of classification processes. Research areas of interest include Feminist and Queer Studies, Science, Knowledge & Technology, and Global and Transnational Studies.

Gonsalves’s work can be classified into three streams:

  1. An investigation of how the category “transgender” is coming to articulate global gender variance.
  2. An exploration of how medical experts produce new gendered and radicalized understandings that are inscribed in the body.
  3. An analysis of an original data set of LGBT organizations worldwide, examining regional influences on their emergence and integration into advocacy networks.

Please join us in welcoming Professor Gonsalves to the ISSG community!
