In this engaging roundtable, two New York-based scholars will discuss their work on the shifting experiences of queer, transgender and nonbinary migration, citing their ethnographic fieldwork from across Europe, Mexico and the US. The conversation and dialogue with the audience will explore the ways asylum has become tied to the regimes governing queer, transgender and nonbinary migration - and by extension, the ways sexuality, race, global rights and citizenship are entangled in the Global North. How are queer, transgender and nonbinary identity envisioned, enacted and contested through legal categories like asylum-seeker and via regimes of citizenship in Europe, the US and Mexico? In what ways do these socio-legal constructions interplay with cross-cultural dynamics of sexuality, gender and race?
