Gays and Girls Make Worlds: Queer of Color Worldmaking in South Africa

In a talk moderated by ISSG director Jack Halberstam and ISSG fellow Levi Hord, Ruth Ramsden-Karelse (U. of Toronto) presents archival and theoretical work on queer-of-color worldmaking in apartheid South Africa.

ISSG Theory Salons feature new scholarship within gender and sexuality studies. Attendees will hear about a visiting scholar's work, read a work-in-progress, and engage in interdisciplinary discussion.

Gays and Girls Make Worlds traces disenfranchised cultural workers’ use of photography, narration, performance, and collectivity to bring new realities into existence, through archival work with a South African apartheid-era collection of photographs depicting the classified-“Coloured,” self-described gays and girls of Cape Town’s lost District Six.

Please RSVP at the external event link to receive a chapter of this work-in-progress before the event.
