The Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender (ISSG) seeks applications for a Spring 2026 Graduate Fellowship. The ISSG Graduate Fellow will be expected to participate actively in ISSG activities. The Fellow will coordinate graduate-focused events such as the ISSG Graduate Colloquium, Theory Salon, Writing Retreats, and Graduate Conference (described below); attend and help with ISSG public programs as needed; and assist the ISSG Director, Associate Director, and the Directors of Graduate Studies and Undergraduate Studies with occasional research and/or administrative tasks.

The Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender announces the winner of the 2025 Elaine Combs-Schilling Memorial Fellowship: Yasmeen Ebada.
We are proud to announce that ISSG-Affiliated Faculty Member, Professor Debashree Mukherjee (MESAAS), has been awarded a 2025 ACLS Fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). The longest running program at the organization, ACLS Fellowships support outstanding scholarship in the humanities and social sciences.
We congratulate Professor Julia Bryan-Wilson, ISSG Core Faculty member and Professor of Contemporary Art and LGBTQ+ Studies in the Department of Art History and Archaeology, for her co-curation of Queer Histories at the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) in Brazil.
ISSG-Affiliated Faculty Member, Professor Debashree Mukherjee (MESAAS), has joined the editorial board at Screen and has joined the Journal of Environmental Media, in an advisory capacity.
ISSG Core Faculty Member and Joseph L. Buttenwieser Professor of Social Science, Lila Abu-Lughod, has received Honorable Mention for the International Studies Association Feminist Theory and Gender Studies Book Prize for her 2023 book, The Cunning of Gender Violence: Geopolitics and Feminism, co-edited with Rema Hammami and Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian.
ISSG Core Faculty Member and Franz Boas Professor of Anthropology, Elizabeth Povinelli, was recently awarded the 2025 University of Antwerp honorary degree in Arts.

In her article, "Gender Wealth Gap in the USA's Afrobeats Scene: The Case of Tiwa Savage and Burna Boy," Professor Ruth Opara establishes how gender has affected the success of female Afrobeats musicians and enabled the stardom of male Afrobeats musicians.
The Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender is thrilled to welcome Lecturer Zavier Nunn. Nunn joins us as a Fellow in the Society of Fellows, SOF/Heyman, Columbia University and will join ISSG as a lecturer.

Students enrolled in the Feminist Theory course taught by Dr. Rae Aumiller at the Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender (ISSG) at Columbia University, have created a blog centered around "Feminist Suspension."
